Legend of the name Lung Cu flagpole

According to legend, the top of Lung Cu mountain is also known as Dragon mountain. Therefore, the name Lung Cu in the H’Mong language means Long Cu, which is the land of sacred dragons.

As recorded in history books. In the reign of King Quang Trung, the king had a large bronze drum placed at Lung Cu peak. Every hour, the drum will be sounded to show the sovereignty of our country. Since then, Lung Cu was also called with the name Long Co, which means king’s drum.

Description of Lung Cu flagpole

Originally built in the Ly Dynasty with a height of 10 meters. Through many restorations, the flagpole has been changed in height and size. The flagpole looks like it is currently built according to the Hanoi flagpole model, but the size is smaller. With an octagonal shape, the base of the flagpole has 8 reliefs depicting the historical periods of the nation. Blending the cultural characteristics of the people here. Above the 8 relief panels are 8 bronze drum faces. As an expression of ancient cultural symbols. And partly conveys the story of the echoing bronze drum. The bronze drum that King Quang Trung ordered was placed at the top of the mountain in the past.

On the top of the flagpole hangs a giant flag 54 m2 wide, symbolizing 54 heroic Vietnamese ethnic groups. The flag was flown on top of Lung Cu mountain for the first time on August 12, 1987. Looking from the bottom, visitors will see the red flag with yellow star fluttering proudly in the middle of Ha Giang’s sky.
